Koala Facts
Koalas live in Eastern and South-Eastern Australia. Their habitat quality can be measured by density of the food trees. Habitats range from coastal islands and tall eucalypt forests to low woodlands inland.
Koala is one of only three mammals which can survive on a diet of eucalyptus , the foliage being very fibrous and low in nutrition, and to most animals extremely poisonous. Koalas seldom drinks water but obtain it from the eucalyptus leaves, which consist of 50% water.
The Koala lives in the fork of a tree. Each marks their tree as their territory. Even after a koala has died, other koalas usually won’t move into the vacant territory for about a year, or until the scent markings and scratches of the old owner disappear.
