The scientific Name for the Postman Butterfly is Heliconius melpomene, and it's native location is South America.
There are several different forms of the Postman. Many consider it the most striking of all butterflies. The bright patterns and slow flight make watching it easy. They can often be found drinking nectar on Jatropha plants. Like many brightly colored, slow moving butterflies, this insect tastes bad to it's predators and advertises this fact by its' color and flight to avoid being attacked. Many predators will avoid brightly colored insect prey, even if they have not encountered them before. This advertisement of distaste utilizing bright colors or striking patterns is called aposematic coloration.
