Nature offers disguises to many of it's members. The Swallowtail butterfly is an example of this. It has two "tails" near their rear, a feature seen by bird predators as "antennae." In addition, in some species, the brilliant red spots in iridescent blue are mistaken as "eye spots." In other words, it looks like the hind end of the butterfly is the head end. Often birds go after this "tail end",and the butterfly flies away with the bird holding a "tail" in its beak. The butterfly may have lost the back part of its wing, but it is still alive! When you are watching swallowtail butterflies, notice that some swallowtails have missing tails!
