• The early Spanish explorers, the first to see the penguin, gave them the name. In 1519 Magellan sailed around the rocky coasts of South America. The sailors thought these strange new birds looked like the large black and white bird, the Great Auk of Iceland and Greenland (now extinct). The spanish word for Great Auk is "pinguis" , which means fat. That is the origin of the penguin's name.
