• Penguins breed in colonies called 'rookeries', some with 180,000 or more birds.
• They lay 2 eggs at a time. Mom and dad take turns incubating them and later feeding the chicks.
• Even if two eggs are hatched, often only one chick will survive. Once the chicks are 2 to 3 weeks old, they will gather together in groups called a creche. The chicks will stay together in groups for warmth and safety while the parents go to the open sea to hunt for food. When the parents return they will call to their chicks. The chicks recognize its parents' sound and will go to them.
• Many species of penguin do form long-term relationships, but some species choose a new mate every year. Blue penguins are among those who form long-term relationships and their divorce rate is around 6% per year.
