Facts about Adelie Penguins

Adelie Penguins live on many different islands off the coast of Antarctica.They don't drink water but eat snow, fish and krill. They have a gland in their nose that takes the salt out of the ocean water that they swallow when they catch fish.

Feathers cover most of their short beak with a head that is all black with a white ring around their eye. They have a white belly and a black back with long tail feathers that drag on the ground when they walk. They weigh about 8 or 9 pounds and are about 24 inches tall the smallest of the Antarctic penguins.

They build nests of stones, and will fight over the best rocks with the male penguin caring for the egg. They are powerful swimmers who can jump straight out of the water onto the land. They are very playful and love to sled down icy hills on their bellies. Leopard seals are their biggest enemy.
