• There are six subspecies of box turtles. Two are found in Mexico. The four found in the United States are:
Florida box turtle
Gulf Coast box turtle
Three toed box turtle
Eastern box turtle
• During the hot summer months, box turtles restrict their activity to mornings and after rain. When it gets too hot, they find a cool place to hide such as a hollow log, deserted burrow, mud, puddle or pool.
• Box turtles limit their world to about a 750 foot diameter or less in which they normally stay. Occasionally, they may travel out from their home range and overlap into another box turtle's territory. Unlike many animals, regardless of age or sex the turtles found together seem to show no antagonism towards each other.
